I believe God loves all kinds of music. And not just songs that use words like God and Jesus.
Look at King David – even he wrote some songs in The Bible that don’t explicitly use such words (2 Samuel 1:17, 2 Samuel 3:33).
Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of music out there which I’m sure doesn’t please God. For example, I love hip-hop – but a lot of the misogynistic, prideful, materialistic lyrics hurt my soul and God. I believe that a lot of music that could have been pleasing to God is corrupted by the messages associated with it.
But I believe that God is still a God who loves creativity. Expression. Musicianship. Poetry. Uniqueness.
Doesn’t a father delight in his son showing him a picture he’s drawn, a piece he’s learned on the piano, a short story he’s written? In the same way, God delights when we sing, play and dance with all of our might for him! Especially when we come to him like a child to their father and say – come and see what I’m doing!
David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the LORD with all his might.
(2 Samuel 6:14)David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals and trumpets.
(1 Chronicles 13:8)Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.
(Psalm 33:3)
When I make music, I invite God to watch me, enjoy it with me, give me ideas and inspiration. Music is a personal journey between me and God. I believe he likes some songs that don’t even have words.
Here’s the hip-hop track I wrote and produced that I’ve been working on for a week in between mourning and medical school. It’s been an emotionally hard week. But in the studio, I like to think Jesus would be nodding his head alongside me.

Psalm 84:5-7
‘Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
who have set their hearts on pilgrimage.
As they pass through the Valley of Baca (Weeping),
they make it a place of springs;
the autumn rains also cover it with pools (blessings).
They go from strength to strength,
till each appears before God in Zion.’
Love it, really
So peaceful
